Description

Barbara Valintine grew up with the sound of her Dad’s auctioneers hammer ringing out in an auction house crowded with people, buying retro furniture and collectibles from estate sales. She developed a passion for collecting like other family members, and for early New Zealand architecture. So when at a Christmas dinner Barbara and her partner Mark Bellringer talking excitedly about buying the Bank of New Zealand building in Eltham I shouldn’t have been surprised. When they first took over the former BNZ it had not been painted for 27 years and was filled with motorbike and car engines. The neo classical building has high ornate ceilings and large windows lighting the rooms filled with Barbara’s collection of antique and retro furniture, collectables, art, rugs, ceramics, glassware, jewellery, furs etc. I began to realize what a gem they had discovered when she led me through the rest of the two-story five bedroom home beyond the shop. Barbara and Mark were in the midst of a huge renovation project in which Barbara’s creativity was in its element, bringing life back into a historic building, and putting the love back into small town Taranaki one building at a time.
